Ceramic tube brick things

Anyone had any luck with these sorts of things in a fuge?  Pros, cons, etc. ...interested in any experience in having pods house up in them.

Things like that are intended as bio-filter media....which is not something generally called for in a reef tank which has live rock (or at least aragonite-based rock).  

 

They are also likely to be composed from not-so-reefy ingredients....some have become notorious for leeching metals.
