Creating custom ceramic reef rocks

Recommended Posts

Hello reefers, i am looking to start a reef and intend to put it in my pottery studio to enjoy taking care of it while making potteries. I've seen around some designs of ceramic reef rocks and would like to know what are the must have when sculpting a ceramic reef rock?

Points i have observed:

1. Holes for coral plugs

2. Porosity

3. Arches

4. Branches

5. Textures on surface (holes or just rough textures)

Would appreciate if you guys can suggest, also, i would like to try custom making for anyone interested, but shipping cost to be covered by you ok?

Thank you all for your time!

Can you blend aragonite sand into the clay blend?  this will likely help with surface texture, and also doing whatever little buffering capacity it can.

i'd worry about holes for coral plugs last IF you can simply drill the finished products.  Maybe more focus on where the branch and ledges on the overall shape will be good for coral placements...
