cmoreash
I've been hearing about people using mangroves to remove nutrients and such, by putting them into a HOB filter. so.....i've got some questions. ------ Can you use just ANY HOB filter? Where can i get some mangrove? (or who on here is willing to send a sprout or 2?) Do you put it into soil, or what? Is this gonna wipe out all the macro algaes? Am I going to need to support it with additional lighting? Is it WORTH it? ------ thanks for listening, i hope to get some answers, and i'll add some more questions if i get some Link to comment
Mnesarchus
There was a website that sold refugium supplies and they had mangroves, I can't remember the URL - does anyone else know what I am talking about? Link to comment
dattack
I have read that macroalgae is like 100x more efficient than mangroves in terms of nutrient export. However, mangroves do look cool. The cheapest I have found is from some guy who sold from ebay. It's only $9.99 for 10 plants and he's from Hawaii. My friend bought 10 and he eventually resold them to the LFS for about $30. The seller's email is hurovb001@hawaii.rr.com Others http://www.coraldynamics.com/Mangroves.html http://www.floridaplants.com/ http://mangroves4sale.tripod.com/ http://www.aloha.net/~hqf/ Oh check out this dudes mangrove kiddy pool. http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/showt...angroves+hawaii Link to comment
printerdown01
I have the same question as cmoreash when it come to mangroves, and that is "additional lighting." I do not have any sort of suspended lighting over my 2.5 gallon fuge (I'm just trying to grow alge, not cook it, lol). Thus, if I were to add a pod, would I have to supplement lighting, or could the light in the room be enough? -I don't live in a cave or anything, there is some light... Link to comment
dattack
I have read that mangroves require very little lighting. Do you have an indirect sunlight or even indirect lighting in the room? They just need a small bit of lighting like any other plants. Also, they can get huge also, so be forewarned. Link to comment
Crakeur
I thought about buying a couple of stalks for my fuge. The fuge is a hang on type and is facing a window that gets enough sunlight that my macro's are growing like wild. Link to comment

SteveC
dattack, thanks for posting the link to that kiddie-pool lagoon. The little beach that person made was amazing, and just the thing I needed to see to get my butt into gear on getting my own tank set up! Dang, if it didn't get so cold in my basement I would do something like this right now! Especially if I could add some waves to roll up onto the beach, some sand crabs, college girls in bikinis... oops, my wife probably wouldn't approve. I do wonder about the waves, though. If you could get some nice foamy waves to roll up into the mangroves, wouldn't that be a form of protein skimming? Steve Link to comment
