testing for my tank

I was wondering whether testing water parameters were the same for freshwater and saltwater? is that true?  I have a freshwater tank and was wondering if i could use the same testing for my new saltwater tank too.

Some test kits will work in both freshwater and saltwater, but in saltwater, nitrate and phosphate (particularly phosphate!) testing needs to be much more sensitive. You also need to get a refractometer to test salinity, not one of those swing-arm hydrometers/hygrometers/however it's spelled.
