filefishfinatic
what do i do with a 2100 gph pump for a 20 high, i was thinking aboiut aiming it almost vertical so theres wave action liek in the wild. idk what does well in over 100x turnover Quote Link to comment
jservedio
The raw flow rate doesn't really matter at all - it's all about how wide the flow pattern is, what the velocity is, and how much turbulence is created by that flow. if it is a narrow pattern high velocity pump meant to push flow the length of a 180g tank, it's simply not going to be useable on a 20g no matter where you aim it if you can't turn it down. If it's 2100gph of slow, wide-pattern flow it'll be just fine. For example - for several years I was running 2x MP10s at 100% on my 20t plus the return pump for a little over 3200gph. On paper, that's a ludicrous 150x turnover - however, because they were carefully placed to create a wide, low velocity gyre pattern my LPS and nems absolutely loved it (and the fact that particulates simply couldn't settle on the sand). On the other hand, I've had issues with LPS being too close to a much higher velocity 465gph pump. Flow rate is pretty much a non-factor without taking into account the flow pattern and velocity. 1 Quote Link to comment
filefishfinatic
its pretty wide. its about the size of like your fist if you are grabbing something big. i was thinking about taking it and making it point upward from the bottom so it shoots up to the surface bumps around then goes back down and agitates and spins all around the tank.
