Hi all,

I've opened this thread to log and show my progresses in marine acquarium, after more than 20 years in freshwater I choose to build my first saltwater tank:

tank size:

90x45 30h (expressed in cm), 120l or 31g

sump 40*45

illumination 2 prime ai hd

skimmer deltec 400i

the cabinet is homemade (and still in progress)

here are some pictures I took (live rocks and sand added on the 27 july)

apart from some aiptasia and majano (that I'm fighting with...) since last friday I've discovered 20 or more strange things attached to the glass, I don't know what they are, for the moment I'm not cleaning glasses anymore... has anyone any idea?

PS: they are 1-2 mm large maximum (including arms)

looks like a type of hydroid that shows up during the early stage of tank maturity

nice set up, by the way

a quick update: I made two tests, I know it's too early, but I was curious, since algae are starting to change color

NO3: 0

PO4: 0.54

... I have still to wait

meanwhile I'm building a new sump to have a 40l refugium...

a new alien appeared on a rock, good or bad?

Mmm... today I found something new...

Those are really tiny (1/2 mm long)

They seem se kind of larvae.

spirobid if it isnt moving.

Mmm... no I've got a lot of spirobid onto the rocks, but those guys are on the glass, not sure whether they are going to transform in something else or some kind of bentos...

Ok now that I have started testing (nyos + hanna), I have some unanswered questions ....

no3 always at 0
p04 0.46 they are slowly going down (last week they were 0.55)... taking a cue from the freshwater, since the algae are pale they are starving and lacking nutrients, so, I tried to restore the NO3-PO4 ratio (Redfield 10: 1): on Friday I threw some dry food granules to raise the pollutants and I would say that it worked, I produced some nitrogen which was consumed by the seaweed expanse along with some PO4 ...

Now I ask myself:
1- where do all these phosphates come from? from the sand perhaps?

2- I would not like to use resins, therefore to lower the PO4 to decent levels:

  •     I still have a little bit of NO3 that I measured in the dessert, I could reintegrate it for 1-2 weeks to maintain the NO3-PO4 ratio favorable to algae / plants and thus consume the excess PO4 in a "natural" way, once killed I could stop the NO3 supplementation and magically the algae should collapse (perhaps odd theory but technically it should work)
  •     I can make a 20%  water change and see what happens
  •     Do nothing at all and wait patiently

3-other doubt:
salinity 34.8 ( hanna electronic test)
kh 9
Ca 490
MG 1470

is the used salt too loaded? (I used the Tropic Marin Pro Reef), should I somehow reduce those values?!?

If your sand is not old, it shouldn't leak any phosphate. (link of the screen capture)

If your rock was live rock, phosphate should come from the organism decay as transport of such rock cause death of a number of organisms.

I would just way it out. If the problem persists, you could still act later.

I started with 100% live rock and the phosphate just fizzle out after some time. Here a Graph of my parameter when I was seriously monitoring my reef 🙃 (the graph have a logarithmic scale)

I don't understand was it your problem with your salt? In a reef tank, stable parameters are the most important. If your parameters aren't in the norm but stable with coral growing, trying to "correct" them will often create more bad than good.

Quick update:

Po4 0.2

No3 0

Ph 8.3

Kh 9

Yesterday I've added 3 turbo and an archaster, so far they are doing a great job!

I still have many aiptasia, I've also found a peanut worm an a new bristle worm ( half red and half black)

This unidentified guy is slowly growing (1/2 cm diameter)

Ok...

Since algae are gone and values are stabile I choose to add some inhabitants:

3 ocellaris ( they were living together and I didn't want to separate them)

A small rock with some zoas

A small calaustrea

Some briareum

Lovely tank 😍

Do you have a plan if one of your clown fish is harassed by the two other?

well.... I bought them together since they were together, if a clown will be harrassed I will probably have to find him another tank...

Hi all,

in addition to some Cyphastrea and Pocillopora (damicornis I think), yesterday I had the opportunity to grab at a bargain price a huge euphyllia (toxic blotchy) from another tank

Another update...

Everything at the moment seems to be fine, I've noticed that the small montipora frags got harassed by a sudden increase in po4  to 0.06( my fault, too many food), now it is back to 0.03

A shy pseudochromis was also recently added...20211020_195200.thumb.jpg.20a9c9be858c1187a2188b6b7af4bfde.jpg

this tank is gorgeous. only reservation is the sand sifting star. the tank looks very natural. if you got  some caleurpa then some goniopora or montipora and you could add a big anenome to the left of the euphilliya and raise the euphilliy up a bit and it would be an almost perfect biotope
