What is this crab? Or is this a crab?

I inherited an aquarium and this is an inhabitant that I cannot determine what it is and what would it do in the tank. 
 

any ideas?

It looks like a Pom Pom crab to me and yes they are great in tanks

Oh, nice! That's a pom-pom crab. They stay very small, so are safe for other animals. Make sure to give it food so it doesn't go hungry.

 

They normally have two tiny anemones, one in each claw, that they wave at predators. They also mop the anemones along surfaces to pick up food. If this isn't holding those, it may have lost them somewhere.

^I second this. Mine is very shy, but it's still very interesting to watch - especially when it waves its 'pom poms'/little nems about. 🙂

Thank you all for providing the information. I see my pom pom crab rarely. How do you feed a crab that is never visible?

You can probably train it to take pellets as well. Put the food right near him with a pipette or tongs, and he'll learn quickly that the tongs mean food. You only need to see and feed him a few times for him to learn that.
