Jaybird5
Hello everyone, I work at Petco so I look at the livestock we offer daily, and I noticed we have a few of these fish. I though it was some type of Goby but I am no means an expert. Any help is much appreciated. Maybe this guy can go in my 20g nano reef when it is ready. Quote Link to comment

I looked up dottybacks and it sort of looked the same. I just could not find it on live aquaria. Thank you! Quote Link to comment
lpsouth1978
If you are looking to put it in your tank, just make sure it will get along with other fish in there. They are pretty territorial and can bully other fish, esp if they have a similar body shape, color, or diet. 2 Quote Link to comment
lpsouth1978
Here is a link to it on Live Aquaria. https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/169/neon-dottyback-captive-bred?pcatid=169&c=15+38+169 Quote Link to comment
Jaybird5
Yeah I just read that while researching them. I really want a pair of clowns for my 20g because you know i am basic. I was just looking for something else to go along. At petco this fish is in a tank with a clown but it is a single clown. So I do not know if it would work Quote Link to comment
lpsouth1978
should be fine with clowns, just add it last. Stay away from basslets, dottybacks, and pseudochromis though. They will definitely not get along. 1 Quote Link to comment

I have been in some stores that I wouldn't EVER consider buying anything wet from, but others that actually have knowledgeable and caring staff with great livestock. I currently have a pair of Black Occs, a royal gramma, and 3 pajama cadinals that were purchased from my local Petco and all are absolutely healthy. I also have several fish from a LFS and doing just as well. In contrast, I have purchased from LFS before and had major problems with unhelathy fish. Illnesses can be present no matter where you buy your fish. 1 Quote Link to comment
Wolf4321man
Very true but a friend of mine bought a clown there as well n it killed half her tank. She had a lot more invested in them. Just my two pennies. Like i said good luck. Quote Link to comment

vegasgundog
Definitely plan on a quarantine and treatment. Not to be rude, but I've never seen any healthy fish at my local Petco. I've thought of getting fish just to save them, but sounds like a lot of work. Quote Link to comment

As I said, I have seen many Petco's I would never purchase from, but there are some that I would have no problem buying from again. My local Petco seems to always have healthy fish, corals (limited to mostly softies), and even some really nice and healthy looking anemones. I don't think this is the norm, but there are good Petcos out there. Since the OP works there, perhaps they would have the opportunity to observe it for a while in the store before making any decisions. 1 Quote Link to comment

I have a couple of fire fish and a tail spot in quarantine right now for another week. I'll never place a fish in with my others without doing so ever again. Quote Link to comment
makingfilms
I believe all the fish from petco are from liveaquaria. I think petco owns liveaquaria if I am not mistaken, so it probably really depends on the individual store. 1 Quote Link to comment

I just checked around and it is true that Petco bought both Dr. Fosters and Liveaquaria. Learn something new every day. I wonder how closely linked they are though....like does the fact that they own Liveaquaria necessarily mean all the Petco fish are from Liveaquaria? Maybe.... Quote Link to comment
Aurortpa
They sourced fish from wholesale distributors. Some stores try to do the right thing and others have staff with only archaic protocols to guide them. Some have systems that are able to be isolated, some have vast interconnected systems. Just depends on your luck. Quote Link to comment

Yeah you can honestly get away with alot at petco. There is only like 5 people that know stuff about saltwater. So if you have some random associate on the floor they will probably ring up the wrong fish. Sadly at my petco the labeling of saltwater fish is awful. So it is hard to tell whats in a tank on your own. Quote Link to comment
Aurortpa
That’s just opportunity for training, pictures pop up for each sku at the POS. The associate writing the ticket for anything in that department should be verifying with a specialist or manager. 1 Quote Link to comment
