LongPig
I want to start a frag tank in a 20 long AIO. What's the minimum amount of rock I can get away with? Could I use those ceramic biological filter bricks instead and just line the bottom? I have room for either a fuge or a skimmer. I'm assuming it's better to go with the skimmer? Is no sand bed a big deal? Quote Link to comment

Subsea
I see no need for rock. Per pound, substrate has much more surface area for bacteria to colonize. Yes, you could use ceramic block for nitrification and denitrification, just as you would do with live rock. I see little need for denitrification, considering that your coral frags need nitrogen to grow. Set up a reverse flow undergravel filter. Aroggonite in sand bed dissolves during lights out when pH drops, assisting with buffering and trace mineral addition. A frag tank should not need a skimmer. My 120G new build is skimmerless. 1 Quote Link to comment
