Mnesarchus
Is it safe to mount the ballast right in the hood beside the bulbs? I am using a DIY ballast (workhorse 5) for my two 55w Powercompacts. Could evaporation cause any kind of trouble? Thanks. Link to comment
Christopher Marks
*Maybe* But doing so isn't a great idea. The heat generated would cause a serious problem Link to comment
tinyreef
ditto, temp. going to be a significant issue there. better to have it remotely mounted 4'~6' away. the ballast is the transformer to step up the 110v (u.s.) to fire up the bulbs whether they're fluor., mh's, or pc's. not a good thing to have over saltwater. NaNO ReeFiN
When I set up my lights, I'm gonna have my ballast on the floor, far and away from my tank. Link to comment
anthony812
another point, the ballast will produce lots of heat, hence heating up your tank and increase the temperature to accelerate evaporation. If you really have to , mount it on the back of your canopy on the outside, i have my set up that way.. Link to comment
Sahin
I agree with both accounts, the heat being the first problem, and then increased risk of electrical shock etc, its all a bad combo in IMO and shouldnt be attempted. I have the ballast for my DIY T5 light kit right inside the tank stand (all the electrical stuff is in this one compartment and nothing else. Link to comment
