We use grazers (herbivores) to help control invasive species; this, along with nutrient control, and manual removal are the most common methods for keeping it under control. We typically welcome coralline algae. This calcerous based algae actually help prevent other invasive algae from taking hold. Then there are ornamental algae species which many people choose to keep in there display tanks (or display refugiums). If left unchecked, pest algae can ultimately take over your reef tank.
