jaynkeel
So this build started as something for my 11 yr old son and I to do, to pass the winter by. It was an idea brought to life and it was fun. I did a build thread on it here : http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/359940-rebirth-of-the-foam-wall-a-new-build/. And now after about a week of running and changing water to flush any nasties out, tinkering with the flow and getting everything just right, it's now filled with r/o saltwater and ready to cycle. The only thing I am waiting on now is my custom nanobox, which not urgent due to the cycle wait. But I do want to play . Here are some pics for the folks who didn't see any of the build that got me here. I will add a parts list later as I am beat.. Link to comment
jaynkeel
Put a couple of chunks of live rock in there to seed it a little. Now the continued wait. Link to comment
jaynkeel
Equipment List Marineland Portrait 5 gal tank Hydor 300 gph pump (stock was 100gph) Deep Blue heater Nanobox mini fully loaded w/bluefish Running stock filter pad w/carbon mini 4 outlet powerstrip I am going to be modding the filter holder to a rack system that holds something other than the stock cartridge. Evap seems to be a non issue since it has a full glass top and cover for the rear compartment, so I don't see an ato being needed. Still working on a custom mag cleaner for the glass using the left over foam and nano magnets / velcro. Link to comment
Arce
Usually not a fan of wall inserts but you did an awesome job with yours. Would look sick as a FW planted or something. Following. Link to comment
jaynkeel
Here is my media basket that I am going to mod. Not the best stock basket in the world but not the worst. It has some nice points. Link to comment
jaynkeel
Scored some free crushed coral from my friends at local pet store from one of their tanks Loaded with mini stars and snails etc Really makes the front edge look cleaner than before Link to comment
tdannhauser30
that bit of live rock blends in perfectly Link to comment
jaynkeel
Crazy isn't it? I dug that out of my sump in my 60 gal, it's just a temp thing though.....I think Link to comment
jaynkeel
Nanobox installed!!!! . Took all of 5 minutes to hook up and up and running. Loving this thing and will be buying more in the future. I went with the bluefish, moonlight, and all channels dimming. Fun Fun Fun!!!! Now gotta take some time tonight and figure out all the features and set the levels. Any advice is welcome. jaynkeel
Thank You. My son and I built this for the wifey, hence the color selection. I would of went burnt orange n black Link to comment
Horerczy
I've been running my four channel at a 1:2.5:1.5:2.5 Ratio of White/Lime:Royal Blue:Violet:Cool Blue/Cyan. I've been running the violets that low because I have 4 of them though. I did turn it up to 1:5:2:5 just to see how it looked and I liked it well enough but I shut the tank the nanobox was over down for the time being. Link to comment

It's gonna take some time getting used to how the bluefish works, I mean it is pretty simple to use but so far I do see a lack of an overall picture of the lighting schedule. Guess I am used to my apex and have to adjust for the new learning curve. Best thing is prob just let it run as I make adjustments for a few days and see how it goes. Seeing as I have no coral in there yet just some live rock and a few small critters. Link to comment
cnseekatz
Looks much better with the substrate at the bottom, and the light is killer. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this tank. I guess one of the positives of the foam wall is that the whole thing is one big frag rack... No room for a plug? Just shove it in! Link to comment
jaynkeel
Yeah the easy part is done, now I gotta find some stuff to put in it without losing my wallet. +1 to the frag rack idea but I am gonna try my best to only attach via glue without the plugs if possible. Link to comment
jaynkeel
Kind of a crappy shot but scored these for $5 Along with these Link to comment
jaynkeel
And some more pics. Some nice mushrooms there is an awesome one that went behind the arch that I cannot reach which is par. Link to comment
jaynkeel
So we decided on a purple firefish. Never had one and always liked the way they looked. And when they say dartfish ,yeah. I cannot believe the accuracy involved in going back into his hole at lightning speed. He has a luxury condo in that cave for sure though and it seems to work out just as planned, and for that I am impressed myself. Seems to be venturing out more and more picking at "food" on the glass and wall. Funny though in the store he was all front and center my nose to the tank glass and he didn't move or hide. Get him home and he's like later dude. It has only been a few days though and already progress so. Tried to catch him from this angle but goneeeeeeeeeeee... Link to comment
jaynkeel
Does anyone know if rock nems would work in this tank? I would like to mount some to different areas of the wall. I ask because I have heard they can be found on walls in the wild, but most of the tanks I have seen have them mounted in the sandbed. Thanks in advance. Link to comment
Horerczy
I think a rock flower would be fine in there. Make sure that firefish doesn't jump. Link to comment
jaynkeel
I taped his legs.... We're good. Got the stock glass top on it but I am concerned about him/ her jumping over the rear wall into the back chamber. That is covered as well but there is a 1/4 inch gap between my rockwall and the bottom of the glass so if he goes up he's gonna end up in the rear chamber. I guess thats better than out? Cool on the rock flower more diversity yeah!! Link to comment
jaynkeel
So hard to get a pic of this mushroom, but I love the maroon color especially against the metallic blue. Link to comment
