So after having a Marineland 27G Cube and a Aqueon 25G tank I have decided to go a new route with my saltwater experience and bought a Biocube HQI w/ stand for $275 off a CL ad near me. On 2.08.15 I transferred my 25G to the Biocube along with some liverock from the 27G. So current setup is:

Blue Tuxedo Urchin
Dwarf Zebra Hermit Crabs
Dwarf Blue Legged Hermit Crabs
Astrea Snails
Super Tongan Nassarius Snails

Coral:

Pulsing Xenia
Acan Echinata
Trachyphyllia Brain
Zoas (Not sure on the name)

Equipment:

Biocube 29G HQI
Kessil A160WE (2)

Kessil Spectral Controller
Hydor Rotating Deflector
Hydor Koralia Nano 240 (2)
Fluval M150 Heater
Intank Media Rack
Intank Fuge Rack
Cobalt MJ1200

How much rock do you have in there? Looks packed you may want to up your flow a bit to eliminate dead spots.

I'm actually not sure how much rock there is exactly, I know its quite a bit and yes I will be adding one or two of my Koralla Nanos to the tank, probably later today. I just got that rotating deflector Saturday and wanted to see how that was in there, and it defiantly could use a more flow toward the mid to bottom.

Thanks for the comments guys.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got some new things on the way for The Salty Obsession should all be here the beginning of the week. Got a Kessil A160WE that should of been here Friday but UPS was delayed down south. And have Intank Media Basket and Fuge Basket coming along with an MJ1200 pump.

Also have some new corals I added to the tank about a week ago, was waiting to make sure they were looking good first before I showed them off a bit. All seem to be doing well so I'll snap some pics tomorrow and you guys can let me know what you think.

Alright here's the pics of some of the corals, I also got a colony of zoas but I moved them today and so they aren't being photogenic today. Here's the link to what I think is a acan echinata, a Trachyphyllia Brain and some pink and purple zoas. The camera doens't pick these guys up as well as I wish it would but heres the link check em out!

My order from Intank arrived today! Got everything installed and I can say I am very happy with how everything looks and works so far. Water level in the display and rear chambers is alot nicer IMO than it was before. And the MJ1200 defiantly has more flow than the original pump which is helpful. So things are coming along nicely.

I also decided last night to get a second Kessil A160WE, Kessil Goose-neck and a Kessil Spectral Controller on the way. So hopefully Wednesday I will have 2 Kessil 160s on The Salty Obsession. I know there were cheaper ways I could do my lighting but I am happy with what I seen the Kessill 150 do and now with the 160s being tunable and more powerful I think it will work good for the tank. Since I love the aquascape I have created in my tank which if you've checked out any of my pictures you know it includes quite a lot of live rock. The plan with having the 2 Kessils is to spread them just a little bit apart and break up the shadowing I have from the rock and single light source. So we will see how it pans out in a couple days.

Here's a link of some pictures of the goodies from today.

Got the new kessils and controller yesterday. After opening everything I realized I needed another cable to connect them together since the control only comes with one cable. Luckily its just a standard 3.5mm headphone male to male cord so I picked one up today after work and got them all hooked up. Still playing with the settings to tweak it in which I'm sure will take some time to find what everything in the tank likes but so far I'm happy with how its all working.

Here's a link to a couple quick pics.

Also in the first post is a link to an album of photos I'm tryin to keep up to date as the tank comes along.

Thats all for now will try to get some good pictures tomorrow with my DSLR.

Just a quick update, everything seems to be liking the new Kessils and starting tomorrow for my water changes I'm going to be trying Reef Crystals.

That's all for now, check out the links for pics and feel free to let me know what you guys think. I'm still working on getting some good photos with the DSLR not very good yet.

That equipment looks great!

I am currently setting up a marineland 27 cube. Any tips?

Thanks! So far very happy with my new equipment.

The Marineland 27 was actually my first tank that I started with. I really liked the size of it and its actually what made me interested in trying a biocube 29. No real specific tips come to mind for that tank. For mine I had a Fluval C4 HOB filter and 2 Hydor 240s in there that seemed to keep the water moving pretty well. I also used another HOB with some cheato and floss in it as a small fuge. For lighting I had a Kessil A150w and a couple Ecoxotic Panorama Pros. Let me know what you got for your equipment and when you get some pics I'd be happy to see how someone else sets up that tank, mine is going to be getting the remaining LR and LS removed and my wife wants to use it for dart frogs so that will be fun turning it into a terrarium.

Thanks again!

That sounds like a nice setup! I was wondering what powerheads I should go with. Two 240's sounds like a good setup! I am going to research that lighting, too. I still haven't purchased any yet.

The filtration that I am going with is the glass-holes "Super Nano Con Dientes" overflow and a 10 gallon sump. I also grabbed a Aquatic Life 115 Mini internal protein skimmer. I just put that last coat of blue paint on the back of my tank and plan on water testing it for a few weeks. Meanwhie, my dry rock is cycling in a rubbermaid tub.

Thanks again for the info and I look forward to updates of your progress!

Sounds like your off to a good start on the filtration!

And with those powerheads just gonna depend what you want to keep in there. I tried to have a hydor 425 and 240 but my hammer didn't seem to like that much flow. So I just stuck with 2 of the 240s. If you do like what you see with the Kessils I would defiantly say get the 160we like I have now over the 150 I used to have. The 160s are tunable with and without a controller and they are also linkable so they can be tuned together. With my rock setup I had in the Marineland the single Kessil seemed to cover well and my hammer showed a good amount of growth with it. But like my new setup having so much LR the single light made alot of shadows off the rocks and hard to keep my LPS at the bottom.

Anyways just a few things there I've learned so far with my experience with the lights. Good luck and looking forward to hearing when you decide more on what your going with.

Got new frags on Monday everything is looking great thanks the Rich at Classy Corals! Wednesday I decided to rearrange my rock a little and open it up a bit more for fitting corals. I actually ended up removing 2 pieces of rock which gave me a lot more room on the bottom to use. I still don't have any shots of the new frags but I did snap some tank shots to show the new aquascape. Frags pics soon to come tho!
