ggrillo
Updated FTS 9/12/15 Background: Started in the hobby about 4 years ago with a petco 10g starter kit. Jumped up to a 20g in a couple months, then got a 55g and 2 years later got a 120. Turned out to be too much tank in a bedroom and tore it down. Have been out of the hobby since. went out and picked up a fusion 10 to start over and really like it. It's cycling now but plan to keep it pretty simple. Pair of black clowns as the only fish and some assorted corals. Definitely want some branching Duncans and maybe a Xenia forest towards the back. This is the kit that came with the 18W light. LongDoggy
Cool 'scape. Good luck with it! Link to comment
joem1cha3l
Looks good! Good luck bud. That xenia forest "in the bank" will quickly spread, just keep that in mind. Look forward to the updates! Link to comment
ggrillo
Thanks. I'm still on the fence if I want to go mixed reef of just an RBTA in the middle. Last time I had one it grew like mad, but the stupid clowns had more interest in the mag float... Link to comment
reefernanoman
Welcome to the club! Nice start. Indeed a great little tank. Link to comment
ggrillo
I don't think I'm going to go through much of a cycle with this one. The rock I'm pretty sure was cured (in a big tub of water with a skimmer at the lfs) and the sand was a bag of that "arragalive" or whatever it's called. At the 24hr mark ammonia looked to be just under 0.25ppm and nitrates were 5ppm. Completely forgot to grab a nitrite kit but I'll test anywaus in the morning and see what's going on with ammonia. kylhcky
mine only took a week to cycle, i still waited about 4 weeks to put anything alive in there just to be safe. Link to comment
Cameron6796
I'm following because I want to see the results of the light the premium kit comes with after a few months if it's good I'll likely get this. Link to comment
ggrillo
Well first impression is that it's very bright haha. I however don't like it personally and will most likely upgrade to a controllable lesson a160 in the future. I'm sure that its powerful enough to grow most corals, but I absolutely hate the discoball effect you get with these types of fixtures. ggrillo
Update: Tank is doing great, used cured live rock so it never had a full cycle. Did a water change today so it's a bit cloudy at the moment, but I've attached a pic of a porcelain crab that's in the tank. Will try and get a FTS tomorrow. Current livestock 2x ocellaris clownfish 1x porcelain crab handful of nassarius snails 3 assorted acan lord frags Link to comment
da1001
Huh. I kinda like it!! Badass piece of rock there, bro Link to comment
ggrillo
Quick Update Algae bloom is pretty much done, at one point the glass would turn solid green twice a day. Have done 2 50% water changes since and it's cleared up a great deal. Clownfish also had a small ich outbreak, but they look like they've gotten over it for the most part. I absolutely love this rock. Link to comment
Azedenkae
Looks great! Those 18w lights look wayyy better than I thought they'd be. I haven't had a chance to see one of this in person, but always been a fan of Innovative Marine stuff. Did you do a phosphate test at the end of the cycle? Those algae blooms sounds crazy. ggrillo
Update Added some GFO in the media basket ( I know, not the best way, but better than nothing) and algae is under control. It'll all over the rocks, but very brown and not growing anymore. Water is looking clearer than I've seen it yet. Corals are doing excellent and added a green/purple and a light teal hammer coral. The clownfish looked like they were doing great, all spots of Ich were gone, but randomly popped back one night and they both died by the next morning. Not sure what happened there sadly. I had switched them to pellet food maybe that caused it. Anyways I think I'm going to run fishless for a month or so to let whatever's in the tank die off. Any suggestions on what fish to add later? Not sure if I want to do the clown again. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Are you using stock lights still? Link to comment
ggrillo
Yes. They are more than adequate for softies and LPS Color is pretty good too. However... I'm ordering a NanoBox mini. Mainly for the controllability with the storm controller. Are you using stock lights still? Link to comment
Cameron6796
Okay cool cuz if It can keep basic stuff happy for a while I might get it. Link to comment
zooman72
Nice tank (have one too, also with a NB Tide), but please read up on "ich" - it did not randomly "pop back up" (was still there, going through its cycle), and you may need more than a month of "going fishless" to be rid of it... Nor_Cal_Cuber
Maybe fire fish? They jump though... Waiting is a good idea. Nice rock imo too. Link to comment
teenyreef
Nice tank! I love the rock And congrats on the upcoming Nanobox - I love mine. Sorry to hear about the clownfish. Ich is so tough to deal with. Link to comment
Nor_Cal_Cuber
It has costed me more money in this hobby than ANYthing. Link to comment
ggrillo
Maybe fire fish? They jump though... Waiting is a good idea. Nice rock imo too. I was considering trying a pair of Helfrichi's. My fusion 10 came with a mesh screen cover. You think that would contain a dartfish? My biggest concern would be them jumping when I have my hands in the tank. Link to comment
