picking an in sump protein skimmer

hello all. I am setting up a fluval m90 all in one. first off i was checking the sump design and did some research. i was dissapointed in the design of the 4 chamber sump. so, out it came. i am now left with a true 36 gallon tank in stead of a 27 gallon display and a 9 gallon sump. i was looking at doing a display refugium in my lower cabinet. i came across the cpr aquafuge mp medium total of 21 gallon with a display of 10 gallon. my question is does any one know of a decent in sump skimmer that will fit in the first chamber? If not ill have to contact cpr. Or are there any other fuges of similar size that any one would recomend? my lower cabinet dimensions are 32x15 assuming ill remove middle shelf or have to lower or brace it to leave room in cabinet base for tank product and such. i will appreciate any advice. thanks mark

Okay let me ask this. Is it completly nessacary to have a skimmer if i want do do some sps corals. Or would my refugium be large enough where i can grow alot of macro algea . I also plan on live rock and miricale mud and ill have room for some chemical filtration after the refugium to keep my water clean. My concern with the skimmer is the removal of important minerals and the fact that it would be going against the miracle mud concept. Any info would be great. Thanks

Miracle mud and macro algae will not replace the nutrient export of a quality skimmer. Honestly, Miracle Mud isn't even worth the effort unless you have a remote refuge that is about as big as your display. I'm opting to just remove the macro algae altogether on my build and have space for a nice skimmer, plus it's just easier to clean without all the miracle mud, macro algae, and rock rubble all over the place. I'm not saying it's useless, just not worth the space/effort IMO.

i did alittle investigation i think ill go with both and ill start off my refugium with the macros i just like the idea and as a second display the fact i can grow macro that will take up nitrates and phosphates. as for the miracle mud ive heard great things and im really interested in any one else using it in conjunction or singly. i come from the high tech planted tank hobby so im familiar with nutrient uptake. Is macro algae in general a minimal nutrient intake? would 10 pounds in a 21 gallon sump be enough to diminish phosphates as stated by eco? or as stated above worth the hassle? i have no experience with any of this so any one else's opinion is worth more to me than imaginable. Thai, have you always used a sump as a fuge? And what skimmers have you been looking at? if i was to do a skimmer as well it would have to be 3x3 maybe 4x4 how ever tall. ill know exactly when i get the sump. ive been looking at the tuunze bubble maggus. cpr makes skimmer for there pro line for the price it might be affordable to start with. any info or Opini0n is appreciated.

thanks mark
