Actually, a protein skimmer was the only man-made filtration device used in the original Berlin Method. Live rock/live rubble (or later live sand) and GAC were the other filtration components. You may be thinking about the earlier Lee Chin Eng 'Nature's Method' which used just air bubbles and/or air stones to create flow and oxygenate the system, but no skimmer. Quote Link to comment
