mafo
Hi. Looking for components list for my custom made flat tank. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0NOL724-24&sns=em Tank dimensions: Length 55 inch Depth 6 inch Hight 15 inch Tank description Fresh water planted aquarium Red Sherry shrimps T5 tube 1 inch above water surface I'm currently using one 39W t5 tube which is 33 inch long and edges of the tank are not covered witch light. I would like to evenly illuminate the whole length and I think that the led's are a good choice. I'm ok with DIY builds but I have no idea what led's/componets to use. I would like to ask you for help in choosing the wright parts. Thaks Link to comment
jedimasterben
The tank is only 4" wide? Link to comment
bdevillier19
beautiful looking tank. due to the tanks size i'd say go with a buildmyled freshwater light. obviously 1 strip will be enough but as far as optics go i have no idea. best to contact them and explain your situation. Link to comment
mafo
The tank is only 4" wide? Is 6" wide. I made mistake witch mm to inch conversion. beautiful looking tank. due to the tanks size i'd say go with a buildmyled freshwater light. obviously 1 strip will be enough but as far as optics go i have no idea. best to contact them and explain your situation. Thanks. Thought about one strip, 4 inch space between led's. Link to comment
bdevillier19
Buildmyled fixtures have a lot more LEDs than one every 4 inches but they are dimmable. Link to comment
mafo
Ok. My tank is custom build and I would like to build the fixture according to my design. I want to keep the project simplest as possible due to limited space. Just need the components list. Thanks Link to comment
mafo
This is my component list : Driver http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/inventronics-25w-driver-700ma/ 10 LED's (cool white 6000K) http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/cree-xt-e-white/ Optics http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/cree-xt-e-white/ (angle 20) Any suggestions ? jedimasterben
For a planted tank you want to mix cool white and warm white in a 50/50 ratio. A cool white LED might appear to look like a cool white fluorescent bulb, but they are very different spectrally and do not provide the red spectrum that plants want for growth. And 20 degree optics are too tight, I would use 60, unless you have them hanging like a foot or more over the tank. Link to comment
mafo
Thanks Jedimasterben. Do you think 10 led's (5 cool and 5 warm) will be enough for my tank ? When it comes to lenses, I chose 20 degrees because tank is only 6" wide and led's will be 1,5" over water surface. Thanks. Link to comment
jedimasterben
Keep in mind that the usable spread of 20 degree lenses is around 10 degrees. If I were at my computer at home, I would open Illustrator to show you the difference. You can use them if you want, as luckily with only white LEDs spotlighting 'disco' isn't bad, but I still think that they'll be too tight and that you may want to also purchase wider lenses just to try out Link to comment
BulkRate
Most manufacturers will ship an "extra" set of optics if you ask nicely during the ordering process. I tend to get my PAR38's with 120 degree optics and ask for a 90 degree set as a fallback - most will work with you if you explain the concern up-front. Neat tank - I'd hate to try to do a reef scape in it, but as a planted FW it looks awesome! Link to comment

That doesn't exactly happen when you are purchasing the components from places that sell optics... Link to comment
BulkRate
Ahhh... slipped my mind as I haven't dealt with BuildMyLED - that would kinda be hovering in that grey area between "parts" & "fixture" I guess. Link to comment
