Open Top or not

AC 500 Fuge Question

I just modded my AC 500 with a baffle and a gate kind of thing on the place where the water exits so no macro exits into the tank. My question is do I need to keep the top open or can I use the top that it came with and drill some holes in it, or can I just use it like it is?

I have seen some off and some on, the tinted plastic takes alot of light away here is a mod I did to mine.IMO it does not matter if the top is left on or taken off.
