mokick3
I am planning to add a metal halide lamp to my 15 gallon tank (a 175 w 14k lamp). This will be a huge increase from my present 24 watt pc. My question is can I prevent a drastic increase in temperature if I raise this lamp 15-20" above the tank iteself? How high can I go to get the benefits of the lamp and also not worry about fans or evaporation? Link to comment

MidiMouse
I think that will be more than fine. My roommate has a 10g with a 150w MH that is about 8 inches above his tank. It only raises his temperature a few degrees and he runs no fan in between. I think with MH though you're almost always going to have more evaporation due to the greater amount of heat generated. If you tank gets too hot, you can also remove your glass hood and blow a fan across the water to help cool it down. But you will get more evaporation from taking off the glass.
