I don't know a thing about photography, but my boyfriend has a D7000 with a kit lens and I'd like to surprise him with a set of extension tubes so he could get better shots of my tanks.

I did a quick search for Nikon extension tubes and there are so many from manufacturers I've never heard of. Can someone do me a favor and give me the top couple of sets of tubes and the advantages/disadvantages of one set over another? A little lost :)

Pick up a set of Kenko extension tubes if you're looking for a set. You'll retain the metering with the contacts. Like most metering lens you'll lose some light so he'll have to step the lens down, but that's not really a big deal since it's used for macros (unless you can't bump the ISO any higher or if you're already stopped down).

Old picture, but here's all three Kenko tubes with the 105mm VR.

Up close any personal with a tiny fly (2 tubes were used IIRC)

Yep, those are the ones.

If you're in no rush, i.e. don't need it within a couple of days with Prime, you can find them cheaper on eBay.

I'm sure he's gonna appreciate that. On a plus side, you'll get some better macros shots of your tanks.

Sounds like a win win situation.
