ive been using my d200 for 8 years how and i finally upgraded to a d600. i am totally new to the whole video scene so im trying out the cam on my tank. trying different settings, different angle, white balance, exposure etc...i just cant seem to get the right color and exposure. when im shooting a FTS video in 1080p it seems like im taking it in 240p and enlarging the video 10 times. nothing is sharp. the colors are really flat. it just looks very nasty to me

this is the best i can do so far.

still not sure what does shutter speed, and aperture does for the video. anyone got any tips and tricks on how to shoot reef video?

First thing, not joking, my girlfriend asked "why are you watching porn, I can hear the music...." *evil glares across the room*.

Second your video looks fine to me. Shots are steady, things are in focus. I don't know what the D600's megapixel is off the top of my head, I'd bet 16 or better. This video is a 1920x1080, so not even a 2meg picture is what we are now left with. This is also considered a normal saturation by the looks of it. The vast majority of consumer cameras, video cameras, and TVs (even my fancy IPS display I'm typing on) are over saturated towards the reds. Sometimes you find a gem that is neutral, like how your video looks.

if your camera lets you, just turn up the saturation (look up in manual what they refer to it as). If your camera doesn't let you, grab some video editing software like Adobe Premiere Effects and bump up your reds, and your blues just a little.

Background - I shot commercial and private videos for 4 years and got to use stuff like Canon XH A1's, and JVC shoulder cams.

haha, i was literally sitting infront of youtube for an hour going through all the music selection they have and got tired towards the end and picked something ok sounding (to me) not my top choice but this will do.

thanks for the tips, the D600 has 24mp and the video is 720p since i was messing with the frame rates and shot some video with 720p 60fps.

i guess i was expecting too much from it....i expected the video of the FTS shot to be a similar quality as the FTS i take...ill keep messing with the settings.

edit, ive since changed the song haha...the porno statement got to me

You can try setting the frame rate down to 24fps. Keep your shutter speed just high enough so you don't see a flicker from the lights, probably 120ish. That should give the video a more movie like feel. The 24fps can also be "sharper" but it's kind of an illusion.

The other option is look for a lens that has good reviews for video quality. I've been wanting to research this part more, as some DSLR lenses translate very well for video use, and some don't. I want to figure out why as it's not as simple as just low F stop or sharp glass.

dSLR's by default compress the utter hell out of colors. That is, unless you're running HDMI to an external recorder and correct in post. You'll notice you can never get a still frame of video to look as good as even a JPEG capture for this reason unless you can shoot RAW.

Next, YouTube is going to apply some compression on their own, and again it's the color space that get's killed.
