Nano Cube 28, bulb change rubber gasket question?

I changed my bulbs on my used Nano Cube 28 for the first time. There is a piece of glass (not the screw on plastic cover) that goes over the CF bulbs. This glass has a rubber gasket that goes around the outside of the glass.

 

When I put the glass on and screwed on the plastic cover, the gasket did not seal well at all on the glass. Is that gasket designed to try to provide a air tight seal for some reason OR is it OK if it's kinda tweeked in spots and not making a seal.
