Icecap mounting question

Just picked up an Icecap 150w halide ballast. The instructions call for it to be mounted on a metal(aluminum) sheet. Can I just mount the ballast on bolts holding it an inch or to off of the surface of my cabinet? Does the aluminum act as a sort of heat sink? My thinking is that if there is nothing in contact with the ballast the air should cool it just as easily if not more so than the aluminum. Does any one have any experience with this?

Yea, the sheet of metal under the ballast is a heat sink. They recommend this to prolong the life of the ballast. cooler running temp = longer life.

I would just bold some metal under the ballast and bolt everything on the cabinet then.

You cna go over to RC.com and icecap has a dedicated forum and they can anwser any more questions you might have.
