96w power quad - ballast location and modding

Has anyone ever opened up a 96w powerquad fixture? I was wondering if I could take the ballast out of the fixture and move it away from the lights to reduce some heat. Perhaps the cord from the ballast to the lights is long enough to keep it away?

 

I am at work right now and just thought of this and wanted to know if anyone every did it.

I have opened up my 96w powerquad since it stopped working about 7 months after I bought it. I remember there being an adequate amount of extra wiring to do some movement with the ballast.
