30 Rimless Cubed

57 posts in this topic

Well here is a thread for my little tank that I am building to tide me over until I have the room to set up my 225 gallon.

I found a nice tank for sale from a local guy and picked up this nice 30 gallon rimless cube 24x24x12 with a centered trapizoid overflow.

It came with a steel black stand but the design on the stand was not well thought out in my opinion. So I made a new stand out of wood, it is designed to have a 4" lip all the way around it. For now it is just going to be the stand but I will skin it later and make the panels removable.

Next I am going to be building a DIY LED fixture out of Cree LEDs that is still in the planning phase.

Well I was able to get a little more done. I got the basic bottom, top, and back board painted and screwed into place. I also filled all the screw holes that were left over from assembly.

I also notched out the top board to allow for the three bulkheads.

Well I got the wood for it to be skinned I am going to go with a simple white stand with no hardware, kind of modern sleek design.

Looks VERY nice! Good job on the stand :)

Thanks, just have to wait for the rain to go and then I can paint it.

+1 serious craftmanship

Thanks, it is surprisingly hard to get all of the pieces to line up just right in a simple looking stand.

Very nice work!

Thanks.

Perfect tank dimensions in my opinion as well. You dont have to have to pound the water with an excessive amount of power to get good light on your corals. Allows for a ton of options for your aquascape. How are you planning to hang your light?

It is going to hang from the roof or with some L-brackets from the wall.

That's a great looking tank man. I love the dimensions of it. It will allow you to do some wicked aquascape. Oh, the stand is awesome too. What light fixture are you going to put over this tank?

Keep the pics coming!

I am planning to do maybe a cove or a simple limited aquascape. I am probably going to be building my own LED fixture but it is a little pricey as of now so I am shopping around.

Two thumbs Up :)

Thanks.

How is this coming along.

It is on a slow down I just had my ACL replaced in my right knee, but the plan for the LED light is pretty much ready to go.

My DIY dimmable LED kit is on it way from Aquastyle. It is a China cheaper version but from what I have read they are capable of everything I need them to do. It will be a 24 LED kit 12 Blue, 12 White, on a 7"x12" black heatsink.

IMO you might want the 36 led kit. 24 CREES over a 30 cube would work, but as the BRIDGELUX are significantly weaker, you might want the extra 12 leds. Plus, if it is too much light, just dim it down.

A few violets would more than make up that difference without needing more white or blue, and cyan and red would give amazing color to the spectrum.

OP, what whites did you go with?

That was a concern, but I don't plan on having many SPS in this tank.

There is only one option for whites with the 24 kit unless it is a special order so it comes with the 10k.
