Placement of the Coral Life 96w power quad

I was wondering what should be the distance from the quad to the surface of the water.

 

I used to have the light on its legs, but it was illuminating the rest of the room too much. So now i removed the legs and placed the quad on top of the tank with no legs. Its about 2 inches away from the top of the water.

 

Anyone else doing it this way too?
