a couple questions..

First, will I need a pump that goes from my tank to the sump, or will gravity alone do the trick.

 

Also, If i had a sump and in it had a kalk drip and protien skimmer, would I need the protien skimmer to do the same gallons per hour of work as the return pump? Are these things configurable? (can change GPH from max?) Thanks for the answers in advance.

Gravity will do the trick as long as your bulkhead is large enough.

 

Protein skimmer doesn't have to be the same GPH.

 

You can change the gph by getting an adjustable pump or throttling it back with a valve.
