Canister for a refugium?

Just for the sake of discussion...

Would a canister work as a refugium? I saw a clear one you could possibly put a light on. The advantages would be: no junk hanging off of the aquarium and less worry of a overflow accident. Would all of the stuff inside just get sucked into the tube? Sand may be impossible but what about plants?

i had the same idea, you could mod the canister so that the sand wouldnt go everywhere.

 

You'd probably only be able to do nutrient export with it. I dunno how well it work to raise pods.
