I'm running a 40L with two 70w MH lights I built with help from guys here. Plenty of light for such a short tank. (assuming you're talking about the same tank I've got: 36lx15wx17t) If you want just one 400w MH, mount it 10-12" off the top of the water, centered, spider reflector parallel with the tank. I have a friend with a 120 with just one 20k 400w and its plenty bright enough to melt mushrooms if they're right under the MH. Hope that helps, Mike Link to comment
