Rinsing & Lighting Chaeto?

I just picked up a tiny wad of chaeto at an LFS and it looks like it has detritus in it. I want to rinse it to get any pests out, so would distilled work? I have fresh saltwater to rinse it if needed.

I also have a lamp that I rigged up behind the tank to grow the chaeto. It gets hotter than my halide after a few hours because it's made from metal. Can I just leave it directly on the chaeto for two or three hours after the lights go out?

TIA :)

Rinsed chaeto in SW and added it. There weren't even pods.

Still interested in lighting question.

As far as I know cheato can be lit 24/ 7 - but most people use just simple low wattage lights for cheato. T5's or even just screw on light bulbs. You should be more concerned with the potential fire hazard with the amount of heat coming from your metal fixture though. A fixture getting hotter than a MH bulb does not sound normal.
