just a random question, but i have a 12v 50w hallogen desk lamp, does that put out a different kind of light then that needed for coral growth? also if it does help coral thrive, is anything needed to sheild the light from directly hitting the water? the light is about a 3inch circle. thought mabye 1 on each side of the tank would be cool....???

halogen will just make your tank an algae pit. The spectrum that halogen puts out is not as good for sw tanks like halide/fluorescent/vho bulbs.

Like MH, Halogens need to be UV shielded.

Like buddha said, the spectrum is super yellow and will benefit microalgae, not corals.

If you have a G-4 base, there are some Xenon replacement bulbs that are "4x whiter" and run ALOT cooler than halogen.
