MGXsport
My cycle has finished in 3 weeks with the follow params constant for a few days. Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0 Ph: 8.4 Alk 2.5 Calcium: ^500 X) Salinity 1.025 Temp: 80.1 I think I need to get alk up just a tad and then get rid of that calcium with water changes. Then by the end of the week I should be ready for snails and more hermits! Link to comment
seabass
Are you dosing calcium? If so, you might decide switch to a two-part buffer like B-Ionic. However, at this point, there should be nothing consuming your calcium, so dosing shouldn’t be necessary yet. Water changes are a good idea. Link to comment
Reefmaniac
Calcium level is fine...nothing to worry about. I have never heard of OVERDOSING calclium but you can definitely have too little calcium in solution. Link to comment
seabass
High calcium isn’t bad by itself; however, excess calcium may enhance the loss of carbonate alkalinity. Link to comment

sidel
Just wondering, what uses up calcium? Corals? Does the coralline (purple stuff) on live rock use it too? Thanks! Link to comment
seabass
Yes, although some corals need and consume more calcium than others. And yes, coralline also consumes calcium (although alkalinity should also be high to get good growth). As your tank matures and you add more to your reef, these will likely become the two levels that you are most concerned about. Remember - don’t dose anything that a test kit hasn’t indicated that you need. Link to comment
