Coral database links

I was wondering is there are more extensive lists around where one can learn more about available corals. I'm trying to get a better understanding as to which ones I will be able to choose from and which one's are out of my reach due to light or other requirements. Considering I don't even know how to distinguish SPS, LPS, softies and so on... even the most basic listing would be of great help.

I've been through the coral database here on nano-reef.com, it's very handy how it's separated by category and provides a lot of info regarding the needs and behaviour of each specimen.

Any other similar listings worth browsing through?

Thanks

Giancarlo

saltwater.about.com has a lot of good coral information in it. There are also some really good retail books that you can use if you can find them. Julian Sprung's books on reef aquaria are great (www.twolittlefishies.com) but are a little pricey.

"Natural Reef Aquariums" by John H. Tullock (ISBN: 1-890087-00-9) would probably be right up your alley, as it groups corals by area and depth, not by species, so that if you look up a particular coral, it will tell you where it came from (carribean, indo-pacific, etc.) as well as the zones they live in (intertidal, fore-reef, deep reef, etc.).

The best book on coral info and selection i've seen so far is "Aquarium Corals - Selection, Husbandry & Natural History" by Eric H. Borneman (ISBN: 1-890087-48-3). It's a very complete book with a lot of info on individual coral species and how to take care of them.

BTW, I've included the ISBN numbers so that you can have a bookstore order them if you want.

All those books are super thorough and will help you I.D. a number of species... Also the one at the bottom is a GREAT book for looking into zone and region specific tanks.

I'll try to find some initial references on the web and about.com before investing in books. All the $ is going towards the setup at the moment :-)

Thank you for the help, I can't believe it has taken me so long to contract "reef fever", but it's here now and I'm very excited to get started!
