well ok I guess what I am saying is .. if possible I could like a clown or two.. but then a VERY nice setup for a reef and maybe a anenome..... maybe a pourciline crab.. I just dont know.. I guess what I am trying to find out.. is what is the base on starting a nano reef... I see peoples reef tanks.. but never a small setup... I did check out the pics on this forum and wow I have to say I love the reefs I see...

ok I will start with a few questions...

I want to get the tank setupa and running

what kinda filtration do I need for a 10g reef?

what should I use for substrate?....

what should the SG be in the tank?

after adding the substrate, filtration, water and salt.. how long before I can add LR?

what is the best lighting system to have for this 10g setup?

and I will start there

to learn you must observe and investigate. cruise around the board and look at other poeple's tanks.

here are some that can give you an idea to what your setup should look like:

http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread...hlight=acoustic

http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread...&threadid=18452

*****

your filtration for the tank should be biological (LR) and mechanical (skimmer).

your sg level should be 1.023 - 1.025

and you can add LR right after you get all the nah2o and circulation running

lighting will depend up to you. i would go custom MH/pc. or the 96watt

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

All of the glass gets a good cleaning weekly, and the tank gets a 6g water change. I mix DI water with Instant Ocean to 1.025SG, and raise Ca with Turbo Calcium by Kent. The Alk is usually OK when I mix it. I let it sit overnight with a Maxi-Jet 1200 and an Ebo-Jager heater set at 80deg F. I feed 1/2" cube of Brine Shrimp enriched with either Vita-Chem or Selcon to the fish daily. I feed Reef Solution, DTs, and Golden Pearls occasionally (each about 1x/week). Also, I sometimes break up an Algae Wafer and throw it in. Ca is kept at 430, Alk at 3.2 meq/L; pH goes from 7.7 at night to 8.3 by lights out. Photoperiod is:

40W Actinic: 8AM to 10PM

40W 10000K: 9AM to 9PM

9W 6500K (refugium): 8:55PM to 9:05AM

1W MoonLite: 9:55PM to 8:05AM

The only circulation is a Rio 600 as the return pump.

If you look around the sight you will find just about everything you need to know. Start here: Nano Reef Information . Then do searches for anything else you want to know. ALWAYS do a search before posting. Some people here get angry if you post something that has already been posted. Example; search for 10g lighting and see what you get, then go from there.

Also beware the tank you have may be contaminated if it is used for FW. Ick medications have copper in them that inverts can not tolerate. The copper is absorbed into the silicone and will be released into the new water.

Welcome to the board

Good luck

nope this tank has never had any meds put in it.. just stress coat and aquarium salt.. thats it

but I will actually plan on taring it down and soaking it in a hot water flush many times

My advice since you are new to SW is this. Take the tank, get about 10-12 lbs of LR, about 10-12 lbs of substrate, a power head, heater and lighting. Set that up and fill with salt water. NOW start reading and researching. By the time the tank is ready to put something in it you wioll have changed your mind a thousand times, and have come to some understanding as to what you want in your tank. Then start adding stuff. And new stop researching. Watching the tank cycle teaches you a lot about SW tanks. You can practice your test taking and water changes...get all the bugs worked out.

Welcome to the club!! It is a fun hobby!

My 10 cost me close to a grand. If you want to go larger knock yourself out just be aware you are talking about on the average $500 per ten gallons of setup... if you want to do it right!
