KyOsIBa515
So I finally set up my LED nano. I have a Tunze 9002 skimmer. At this point I am running just the filter media to get most of the garbage out of the tank. How long should I wait to run the skimmer? Running a skimmer immediately from my understanding is counter productive due to the cycling process. Granted you are skimming a lot of junk out of the tank. You are also taking away from beneficial bacteria trying to form. Link to comment
Aquanist
Skim away. Beneficial bacteria doesn't float around in the water column. They live on every surface, so skimming doesn't remove them. Link to comment
HecticDialectics
I think the only theoretical reason for not skimming during the cycle is that you're taking away nutrients that the bacteria eat so you aren't getting a good strong population. I personally think that reason is silly... look up some stuff on the oft-controversial "hard" versus "soft" cycle debate. It definitely doesn't remove beneficial bacteria though. Link to comment
