I'm finally getting my 37g (yeah, it's borderline nano, but this is such a great forum) all set up, and am fixing to start adding LR... I've got an AC500 on there, ready for refugium duty... I've also got a AQ surface skimmer that'd being donated from my FW tank... Question is, those who are using this setup, are you using the complete surface skimmer assembly? I'd thought about taking the flow control stem and the clear plastic piece out, and just using the main black body tube and hose... removing these pieces would make the skimmer much less conspicuous in the tank... Are we really concerned about skimming water off the very surface to run through the refugium? Seems like the skimmer is more useful for flow reduction than anything, a lot of which probably comes from the smaller diameter, accordion style tubing... does it really matter if it's water from the surface, and not a few inches under?
