PetPeople
We have a 10 gallon aquarium that we set up on 04Feb04 with 10 lbs of live rock and 12 pounds of sand. Depending on who you talk to some people are telling us to do our normal water change (10-20%) each week, while others are advising not to do any water changes until after the first month. At this time we do not have anything else in the tank, but hope to start putting some blue hermit crabs in this week-end. If you want to see the tank and read our experiences please visit us at www.crookshideaway.com. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about doing water changes in the first month? Many thanks!! Tempest
Personal preference. Doing water changes while your tank is first "cycling" will prolong the cycle, BUT allow more of any life on the rock to survive (hitchhiker snails, crabs, worms, sponges etc.). NOT doing any water changes during cycling will result in a quicker (but smellier) cycle, however, you are less likely to get any surviving hitchhikers. Link to comment
Aiptasia
Yes, it's a preference issue. Personally, I don't like to stall the nitrogen cycle, and the number of creatures that survive the curing process of the LR will still be more than plenty. I'm constantly amazed by good quality live rock, it's dynamic: always sprouting or producing something new. Link to comment
