Sump refugium trickle ideas

I got this wet dry filter for free. My sister had it in her basement and had no idea what it was. It has the overflow box and another acrylic box to hang on tank. Then it also has bio balls in it which are probably old. Should I get rid of the bio balls? I have to buy the tubing and pump. Which size pump would work? I want to make this contraption into a sump. Could I use the acrylic box (on the left of the pic) as a small refugium? It is divided in half up to about 2 inches of the top? Or should i make a refugium in the actual filter and add a light? I would like to put the heater and skimmer in the sump~any suggestions?
