ok so i went against the grain and picked up a new oceanic biocube protein skimmer... picked it up friday night but didn't get a chance to install it during the weekend, so i decided to call in sick and use the monday to give it a shot. was a little concerned at first, but after some patience i was able to get it running smoothly. took a few pics for those who may be considering it - hope you find the info helpful. (sorry for the blurry pics)

here's how it looked when i opened up the box:

here are some measurements i thought might be useful for people who are considering it:

a shot of the power adapter info:

the manual made it seem like the top black piece of the skimmer (that latches onto the wall between chambers 1 & 2) can be removed from the reaction chamber - mine doesn't. the top piece on mine is stuck to the reaction chamber assembly, so the outer chamber cylinder and the top piece made one part and the inner cylinder and bottom piece made another part (as shown in one of the 'measurement pictures'.) there are small vents on one side of the bottom piece. after removing the two parts to connect the airline tubing to the wooden airstone, i connected them back together in a way so that the vents were directly facing the incoming flow of water (notice that the two suction cup holders do not align).

in order to hang the skimmer on the wall between chambers 1 and 2, i had to remove the clear plastic piece that comes with the inTank media baskets (which is meant to securely hold the basket against the wall).

even without the clear plastic piece, the baskets don't seem to move - actually mine don't even float away from the wall (while the tank is running).

i have a 100w stealth heater in chamber one. one of my concerns was whether or not both the heater and the skimmer would fit in that chamber, especially with the collection cup. turns out that the longer part of the collection cup faces away from the side of the tank and points towards the middle (when you place the cup on the top of the skimmer, you can feel when it's "in place" as there are markings on the bottom that will lock the cup in place).

i know that a lot of people are not a fan of this skimmer, but it seems to work fine for me. after installing it, i adjusted the air flow valve so that it was 'half way'. the airstone only produced 1 thin stream of air bubbles at first. it actually took about 5-10 mins for it to do that. that's when i got concerned, and thought that i had a faulty airstone. it took 2 hours before the airstone started producing bubbles. here's what it looked like after 2 hours:

i'm not saying that you should get this skimmer, nor will i guarantee that it will work for you and your setup - i'm just showing that it worked for me and my setup. for those of you who are considering this skimmer, i hope you found this to be helpful in making your decision. thanks for following along..

cheers!!
