Austin
Hello GUV'NOR! You can use DI (deionized water) or distilled water (in that order of preference) with no troubles. If you are getting your water from various sources, you MIGHT invest in a TDS meter. See, TDS (total dissolved solids) is the measurement that it's all about it: TDS=0 is the magic value for suitable tank water. CHEERIO! Link to comment
Reefmonster
Depending on where you live you can also sometimes use well water. My Brother's well is high in Calcium carbonate, and low in almost everything else, and his corals love it. I'm not sure I would use it, but he has a great looking soft reef with 2 bird's nests and all his coral do very well. I had the municipal water department test it for me and it was mostly dissolved carbonate. He lives in Tooele County UT. Good luck! Link to comment
lakshwadeep
Filtered water, of course, like distilled or RO/DI are the most consistent in quality. Tap water can be used in some cases, but it is not often consistent. This article is one good explanation: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/jan2004/chem.htm Link to comment
