Raise lights, lower temperature?

Hello, I started a 10 gallon tank 3 months ago. I had 20 watts of lighting.Occupants were fish, inverts, and 3 featherdusters. I bought a Corallife Aqualight (quad 50/50) 96 watts 20 inch.I placed it flat on a glass top and apparently boiled my animals while I was at work.( In case I didn't mention it, I am new to saltwater aquariums) The light has 4 fans, if I raise it 2 inches will it still over heat the tank? Or was the only problem the light was flat on the glass? The room temp was around 69 degrees. The prevous tank temp was around 80 degrees before the new light.I can't afford a chiller and would prefer not to have an open top tank. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Having a glass lid on the tank does make it difficult for heat to escape and evaporation to occur which helps in cooling the tank. If you are worried about fish jumping you can make DIY screen/egg crate top instead of a glass cover.
