Fuge Maintenance

What kind of maintenance does a refugium require. Besides pruning the macro. Do you scrape the glass? Or do you just let it go and manage itself? What if you get cyano in it? Do you put snails and crabs in it?

I have a couple snails and hermits in my 'fuge. Once a month, I scrape the glass when I do a WC...other than trimmin the macro...that's about it for mine.....

i'd avoid herms or any crabs in a fuge unless the purpose of the fuge is for algae scrubbing or just bio-diversity. the predatory nature of herms/crabs kinda defeats the purpose of a protective environment.

otoh snails are good imo as they contribute to plankton (spawning) and maintenance.

manual maintenance can consist of keeping macro growth to a point of allowing future growth. no more room and the macro may spawn in an attempt to 'escape'. i also tend to clean up some of the slimey buildup (slime algae and mulm). i like to be able to see into the fuge so occasionally the walls might be scraped too.
