Cerith Snails as a Magnesium Test

When I made my two-part a couple of weeks ago, I mixed up some Magnesium (Epsom Salt) as well. After reading the default level of Tropic Marin Pro-Reef was 1350ppm, I bumped the Mg up by 150 over the next few days. Almost immediately, my cerith snails started laying eggs like crazy. A few days ago they stopped.

 

Just to check where my Mg was at, I had cptbjorn do a test with his kit. He wasn't completely confident in the result, but he reported 1200ppm. I bumped the level up by 50 again last night, and woke up to a few new egg trails this morning.

 

I'm wondering if anyone else has Florida Ceriths and has noticed this behavior? It might be a 'cheap' Magnesium barometer.
