coraline algae . .

Okay I know that lots of reefers find pink/purple coraline algae desirable. However, its starting to grow all over my back glass, inlet tube on my filter, snails, etc. I've seen pics of ppls reef tanks COVERED with the stuff to the extent there isn't even a clear spot on the back glass. What are the benefits of it besides esthetics? Should I leave it on the glass or just scrape it off?

it also provides a better foothold for corals. it cements the rockwork together. it's an excellent indicator for optimal conditions for stonys. their spores add to the available plankton. it also provides another habitat for microfauna. sometimes they add addition surface area, then again sometimes they cut off surface area. personally, i just like the look. hth

I don't know, I am really starting to love the look of hair algae over coraline. More movement, grows faster, much more natural color and much easier to maintain.......
