in tank sump/refugium?

I am converting a 20g hex to a reef and would like to have an all in one. I need some advice on the separation. Would it be better to cut slits in the acrylic for water to flow into refugium or, would it be better to put in a bulkhead? I was thinking that slits would give better surface movement.

How big a pump can I use? I would like to not have any powerheads in the main tank so I was thinking of connecting the return to a spray bar. Would that work? Thanks

i would just take eggcrate and make a bok out of it...it will keep the preditors out, let light in and let the water flow free.......gl
