Oolitic Sand

Howdy all. I'm getting ready to start cycling my first nano this weekend. I found somebody in the area through craigslist.org that is selling his live sand at .50 a pound. Good deal right? It's 7 years old and is a mix of argonite and oolitic. Is there anything I should be cautious about? I have been able to find that oolitic sand comes from Great Salt Lake but no real info on aquarium usage. Anyone had any experience with this stuff?

Oolitic sand is more of a descriptive moniker than being a specific sort of sand from a specific location.

Often the phrase "oolitic sand" is used to define any fine grade calcium carbonate sand. However, true oolitic sand is composed of oolites - basically tiny spheres of carbonate that form fine grains of sand.

Regardless of what it is called, if it is sugary in appearance, it should be fine for your tank. Best of luck.
