regius34
i would like to know if you can use another type of rock like tufa or lava as a base rock and seed it with pieces of live rock Link to comment
maroonclown
Tufa. It is a good rock, but you need some kick-@$$ seed rock. Link to comment
tinyreef
many people decry lava but over half my display tank is lava (red not real lava). 10% is tufa and the rest is fiji. there are varying grades of lava tho (as with all rock). some are very light and porous and others very heavy and solid as well as points in-between. whether you go tufa or lava you should soak them in FW for days besides a good scrubbing. some people report impurities with lava but i haven't come across this (doesn't mean it doesn't occur tho). i just prefer lava as it usually comes in lighter forms and better shapes than tufa. you can also rummage thru the rubble bins in lfs. often you're come across a nuked out 'display-grade' piece of rock/boulder. i grabbed a few recently ($1.65/lb) and they're seeding in my sump. no room for them but they're gorgeous specimens! (squirrelled away for the future 300g~600g tank ) hth Link to comment
