Biotoper
I have an API Ca test kit, probably 6mo-1yr old. I haven't used it much. I tested the other day and only got 260 ppm (10 drops bottle 1, 13 drops from well-shaken bottle 2 to get blue change). So I added some of just part A from my C-Balance, and tested the next day. Still 260 ppm. Ok, maybe I need more time. But I had just made a batch of new saltwater with Instant Ocean, so I tested the new SW. It's 260 ppm?! Can a test kit go bad and be consistently inaccurate? I appreciate your help. Thanks, Ryan Link to comment
Biotoper
Or my wife just told me that maybe my IO is just low in calcium. Doh! Could that be the problem? Link to comment
badfinger
if its just regular instant ocean then yes it is low... their reef salt has good amounts of calcium though Link to comment
Biotoper
Ok thanks - yeah, it's just normal Instant Ocean. So adding calcium chloride would be pointless if I keep using the IO for WC's, correct? TIme to get new salt. Link to comment
lakshwadeep
Adding calcium chloride is okay in the short term, but it is also adding chloride (affecting the salinity). You may want to try some other brands, as reef crystals (the high calcium version) and instant ocean has recently been inconsistent in composition. Link to comment
