thisanthrope
I am confused on what the difference is between what I have purchased as button polyps and zoanthids. someone has told me the difference is that the buttons are a colony like yellow polyps and the zoanthids are a mat. on the zoo rock I have the individuals are a polyp unto themselves also. what is the family name of the button polyps. I have pics of both on my web page If you think I might have misidentified the buttons. click on the nano tank Link to comment
enrico
Button polyps is a common name. Zoanthids comes from the scientific name... They usually refer to the same animals... Link to comment
thisanthrope
so the pic I have labeled as button polyps are in fact zoanthids? Link to comment
harbingerofthefish
I would say they are both zoanthids. I see more Palythoas being labeled "buttons" than I do zoanthids. *side note* You have photoshop or some other kind of imaging software? Maybe you can optimize your images for us dial up users? enrico
If they are what they seem to me (you should try to buy a good book to have a proper identification) they are part of the order Zoanthiniaria, suborder Brachycnemina, family Zoantidae, genus Zoanthus... This is their almost complete name, from order to genus, the exact specie is almost impossible to guess. The previous lines are one of the reasons why they are called just button polyps or zoos A good book to identify your "corals" might be: The modern coral reef acqaurium volume 2 by Fossa & Nielsen...
