if you have a 20 gallon tank and your planning to have a sump for it how many gallon should your sump be?

i don't think there's any real 'rule of thumb' for that. it's more of a how much space do you need for what kind of stuff you plan on having? (e.g. HOB or outside skimmer, refugium-yes/no, return pump in/out tank, algae scrubber-yes/no, etc.)

 

one thing you ought to plan ahead besides all that is the possibility of a power failure creating a siphon back to the sump from the display tank. you might want sufficient extra empty volume in the sump to be able to handle that to prevent overflow. hth
